The Difference Between Frequencey and Payback
There are players who wouldn't get on a slot machine because it has less payouts than other machines. Players would often shun a slot machine that gives you less chances to win and prefer one that lets you win more times. At first, this may seem right, but after understanding the frequency of payouts and the amount of paybacks of slot machines, you'll have a clearer choice next time.
Have you ever heard of a cold slot machine? Players often call a slot machine where the pay table shows that you have less chances of winning as a cold machine. Too often, players would refer to this as a slot machine with a low payback. The truth is that is incorrect.
When we say a slot machine has a low hit frequency (meaning there are few chances to strike a winning combination) that doesn't mean that that machine has a low payback. Payback is something utterly different from what players refer to in general.
Payback, to set things straight, is what a certain slot machine will return in the long run. Often you can get figure that by getting the percentage of the returns. There are machines that have a payback somewhere between 80-99%. There are even casinos that advertise the amount of payback a slot machine gives out to attract customers (and also to make customers spend more time playing on a slot machine).
Players refer to slot machines with a small payback as a tight slot machine while the ones that give a high payback as a loose slot machine. Some states regulate the payback of slot machines, which is essentially good so players don't lose out on the deal when they play on slot machines.
On the other hand, frequency is what we refer to when we say that a slot machine gives more chances to players to strike a win. The frequency of winning combinations depends on how many times one symbol is on a reel. Another thing to look at is the number of occurrences to hit a winning combination on a slot machine.
One thing you'll notice is that a slot machine with low frequency will have high paybacks while a slot machine with a high frequency will have low paybacks. All you have to do is to know which is which is to check out the pay table and check out the payback percentages.
We are now left with the choice whether you want to play on a slot machine with a high frequency but low payback or a slot machine with a high payback and a low frequency. Which slot machine to play on is really up to you.
